Please also keep in your prayers all their friends and relatives living elsewhere who are beside themselves with worry. Pease keep in your prayers all those who have been affected by the recent earthquakes-those who haveīeen killed or injured, those who are still missing and all those who are without a home, warm clothing, food and drink. Sacraments are never taken, but received, and the gesture of “self-intinction” denies this reality.įor Sacred Heart we will not be taking communion under both kinds at the present time. Likewise, communicants are not permitted to receive Holy Communion by “self-intinction” where having received the Sacred Host in the hand, they proceed to the Precious Blood and “dip” the host themselves into the chalice. The Bishops’ Conference have decided to affirm the practice found in Celebrating the Mass which states that this form of the reception of Holy Communion “is not recommended in England and Wales.” It restricts the possibility of the communicant to receive the host reverently in their hands. The question of the possibility of intinction (when the Host is dipped into the Precious Blood so that a communicant receives both together) has been raised. In addition, proper catechesis and instructions will need to be given to duly commissioned Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Parish priests will carefully need to discern the practicalities and health situation in their parish. The reintroduction of Holy Communion under both kinds is therefore permissive, not obligatory. I will grant permission for this in the Diocese at the discretion of the parish priest based on the circumstances and situation of the parish. This will be from Holy Thursday, 6th April 2023. The Bishop’s Conference have decided to permit once again the practice of giving Holy Communion under both kinds.
